I had the same problem.  All the gears are in good shape, but the shaft 
that runs through the numbers insisted on working its way out.  I ended 
up glueing a piece of metal to the housing.  It fits up against the end 
of the gear as a thrust button for it to work against.   Has worked for 
the most part since.  It actually quit for a few months and then just 
started working again and has worked for a few thousand miles.  I guess 
that is my Audi gremlin at work.
