I used to have an 84 VW Rabbit GTI, did the same thing.  I'm not familiar with the inside of the Audi fuel tanks.
On the Rabbit, near the center of the tank it has a recessed spot. like a reservoir. (that was for fuel injected models...carb model Rabbits didn't have or need that feature)  the fuel pickup ran from that recess across to the tank outlet, with a steel pipe running across.  what happened with some of those Rabbits, the pipe would separate so that it was no longer one solid pipe from start to finish. when cornering right the fuel would slosh away from the outlet pipe of the tank, and the car would either almost quit or WOULD quit running.  with the separated pipe, the Rabbit would starve for fuel anytime less than 1/2 tank when cornering right
