Common starter problems on CGT?

My starter has started making funny noises. I don't know how else to explain it. It's not griding per say, it just sounds a lot different than before. I'v ebeen using an indepentded local mechanic. He is a very good general mechanic, but has little specific Audi experience. He listened to it and agreed, it doesn't sound right. His thought is that it's dying and I should prepare for a rebuild. But, I want to look into other possibilities. So are there any "common" things that myght go wrong with the starter system on a 1987 Coupe GT? Solonoid not engaging all the way? Engaging too far? Starter allignment? Untill just recently it had been fine since I bought it 3 years ago...
