starter with and without gearbox

After got some Audi for parts , i got couple starter too.
Only one of them has a gearbox, it s was on a 5000T 1985. All the others dont have that gearbox, the ouput shaft is direct to the final gear for the flyweel.

So what s for ? gear or without gear box ?

Gearbox unit spin slowlier ? but stronger ? maybe  was desing for diesel engine !!

It s just a cuiriousity question...

The starter is not pink or violet for betterr performance, it was not on a Honda ;-). It all black with low profile heat sheild ;-).
