I agree about not giving ANYBODY your family or business checking account 
information.  I, however, opened a small free checking account which I use 
exclusively for PayPal purposes.  I keep a small balance in that account 
which is small enough that if someone did manage to get into it and clean 
it out it would not be even painful much less ruinous.  When I need to send 
a PayPal payment to someone and the bank deposit is insufficient it is a 
simple matter to stop by the bank and make a deposit of the appropriate 
size and then transfer the funds into my PayPal account.

This works well and has quite limited rip-off hazard.
