Auto transmission remove and replace

Wow - its been a long time since I thought about one of these... First
off - did you get just the trans, or trans, torque converter and
differential? I think I did a writeout on it once. It may be under
dave.head at att.worldnet.net or some such.
These are really not that tough to do. Essentially, to remove the
differential/trans as a unit you get it up on jackstands and remove
everything that's in the way or attached to it, as the book sez. That
book is your friend - it may not seem to give a lot of detail, but it
does. Other than triple squares for the drive axles (and not always!),
no special tools are needed. Its actually light enough - I would set it
down on my chest when removing it, then slide out from under it.
My first audi was a 79 5KS - it was a great learning experience for Audi
ownership. I went through 3 transmissions and a differential in that car
- in a year. My understanding of Audi design was nil, and my expertise
as a mechanic was basic - remove and replace. If you are at that level,
you can still do this job. The first time I did the trans it took the
entire day. The 4th time it took 3 hours start to finish.
There really aren't any adjustments as such. Its a very basic 3 speed
trans. You have a load sensing arm that comes off the throttle assembly,
I remember that much...
If you are replacing the trans only (cute little square box), there's
more...
