Your problem sounds like a fuel pump. Try pulling the fuel pump relay out and 
jumping the large terminals in the fuse/relay panel. Bridge the two large 
terminal slots to mimic the relay in a closed position and feeding the fuel pump 
power. This will put power to the fuel pump and you will be able to hear the 
pump run. I have had this same problem in the past.
