Head problems

Here's a mystery I need some help figuring out--HELP LIST, Please.
Last week I bought a 93 VW Eurovan, with the 2.6L I5, basically a stroker Audi engine. It came with a story about one valve being a little bent, and after taking it to the machine shop yesterday, it turns out to have 4 bent exhaust valves. Now, 1. I thought this was a non-interference engine, and 2. the pistons show no marks that we can see.
The head is getting the valve job, guides, and new valves as soon as the parts are here. My question is, how could this happen to a non-interference engine, or is my assumption about this wrong.
Another thought I had was how about substituting the head from another engine. What would work?
Thanks, Chuck Hill
