Actually that's a bit of a misinterpretation:
"Manga" is general term referring to comic _books_ in Japan, much as the term "anime" is refers to Japanese animation (sometimes referred to as Japanimation.) Most anime is derived from manga (like Dragonball Z,) but not always. "Spirited Away," the anime with the A4 in it (requisite Audi content), is an example of one that wasn't a manga first.
Usually manga is printed in B&W or 2-color on newsprint and contain a number of serialized storylines. IIRC, the term originated from Hokusai, the great Japanese woodcut artist, whose 'Hokusai Manga' was a series of sketchbooks he started in the 1840s.
"Hentai" is the term usually used to refer to the "hardcore erotic comics." There is another term with slightly different connotations, but I can't think of it off the top of my head. These are the ones that tend to center on Japanese schoolgirls and the octopus-demons who "love" them.
In Japan _everyone_ reads manga, and there is no stigma attached to adults reading them, unlike the 'Comic Store Guy' stereotype that exists in the US, though you might be referred to as a "hentaido" if you tend to read/watch hentai a little tooooo much...
