Clutch pedal problems - 4kq/QSW

The clutch pedal will not stick or bind, it feels pretty good, but it does
have about 2" of play before it actuates the master cylinder pushrod. This
makes the clutch pedal a bit weird to use, as it won't "disconnect" at all
before the pedal is completely depressed. Even then, it feels a bit like
it's still connected - hard shifting and I can feel some movement in the car
when shifting while standing still. The firewall is not cracked, though it
will move a tiny bit, but my problem comes from the play before the master
cylinder is actuated, I guess.
I don't find any information in the Bentley regarding this, but I suppose
that 2" of play before the master cylinder pushrod actuates is far too
much.. It almost looks like the pedal has worn from a round connection to an
oval shaped one..
Anyone BTDT?
