Stinky TDis (some Audi content)

Ok, having owned at least 6~8 VW diesel vehicles in
the past 24 years (including two '98 Jetta TDis now):
1) The TDis won't pass the Calif. regs. Too much
NOx, that is inherent in the diesel combustion
process. Particles are also a problem.
2) There are about 4 or 5 other states, including my
home state of Noo Yawk that mimic CA regs. If it
can't be sold in Calif., it can't be sold in the mimic
states either.
3) Any further reductions in diesel emissions require
add ons to the emission control system that will
REQUIRE the use of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)
which won't be on the market in the US until sometime
in 2006. Expect diesel fuel prices to go up to
reflect the additional refining costs of this new
product.
Many listers now live in areas where the EPA requires
"gourmet gasoline", which of course, you pay for.
Same thing here.
4) Some technologies are viable but not yet EPA
approved, such as a urea based exhaust cleaner. EPA
wants this stuff to run 100,000+ miles without
maintenance and the Urea exhaust treater requires
regular maintenance.
Audi content-many Audis are sold outside of North
America with diesel engines. Rumor control says there
is a 2005 A6 with a diesel TDi option.
Paging Lenny Hunt in Mich...are you listening?
