You were so close.

Glass hates bending loads. Tension is bad in glass, especially if there is
any sort of stress concentration such as a nick or deep scratch. Of course,
that is how you cut glass, isn't it?

I ran in into the same thing trying to get a window out of a salvage yard
two years ago. Just when I thought I was home free I put a bit too much
bending into the window and it turned into assorted pieces.

This never happens to me until I have already invested a bunch of time into
the tasks. I think it is a corollary of Murphy's law.
