thanks Frank, this was exactly what went wrong. The wire bundle is secured with
a cable tie to the hinge arm on the trunk lid. Over the years as the wire as
been forced to flex causing the now brittle insulation to come off on either
side of the tie. I had three wires with missing insulation and one that was
outright broken. I would suggest that other people with 4kqs unwrap that old
tape and check/repair the wires that go into the trunk lid, I am sure mine is
not the only car with this problem.
