Thanks to EVERYONE for helping Bob (D'Amato) and I survive this road trip.
Bob (Myers) got the message out fast and there were no less than 16 offers
of parts and assistance within 30 minutes. Jake & Tracy, in Mesa , AZ, were
virtually on the route we were traveling and volunteered a perfectly good
used replacement part. In fact, it's in better shape than the undamaged one
on the right side. Aside from the robust mechanicals in these vehicles,
it's the people like ya'll that make owning them fun. I can't imagine this
type of support if I were to drive my older American vehicle across the
country.
[Jake, if you're out there, contact me off-list so we can chat]
Bob (D'Amato) & I started this trip in CT and finished in WA. In-between,
we accrued over 6400 miles in 11 days and drove through 15 different states.
Other than the need to buy 4 tires, and replace a couple of hastily acquired
parts, we lost less than 5 hours from our trip. We saw temperatures that
ranged from 63° one evening to 128° in Paradise, NV late in the
afternoon....and this is well after the air conditioning gave up the ghost.
The fuel mileage ranged from 22mpg in city use to as much as 27mph on the
Interstate. We ate 8-9 times throughout the trip. (Once a day if we
remembered to, but there were Pop-Tarts in case of emergency) We drank a
combined total of nearly 15 gallons of various drinks while we were in the
car.........more than that if you include the various restaurants/homes we
stopped at. Bob's GPS told us the overall average speed was over 50mph.
(Keep in mind this included stopping each night to sleep) Top speed
achieved was 120mph and that was only to insult a particularly aggressive
driver in a Pontiac Grand Am. He's probably still wondering how an 18 year
old station wagon could out run him so easily.....and so often. ;-)
Thanks again,
