Many a Mercyless Benz model has gone to "hard" code electronics, once a
major component (like a transmission) throws an error code, the entire
control unit MUST be changed for a new one, and flash programmed at the
dealer....to the tune of about $600 a pop.

But the good news is that there are already some after market companies
selling control units, new and rebuilt. These aren't that cheap either,
but no where near the ridiculous dealer prices.
