Tony, Kneale, Doug, and Louis:
Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions and advice. As it turns out
the "brand new" ignition switch I had installed about month ago, was the
culprit. Luckily, I ordered two at the time and so I just pulled the
harness off the back of the switch and plugged the other new one in and she
fired right up (dash lights, guages, fuel pump, power mirrors all worked
fine)
So, then the fun begins removing the instrument cluster to get to the set
screws that hold the switch in place. With a flashlight; a mirror; and my
wife's nimble fingers the switch was out in about 20 minutes. Replaced
with the new and button her all back up (the car not my wife ). I
sincerely hope I don't have to go through this too many more times.
Anybody have any experience with different ignition switches: the first
one lasts 14 years, and the second one lasts about a month? I did not buy
the replacement switch at the dealer, I used P.A.P. and bought their $8.64
switch (they were so inexpensive, I bought a extra, good thing I did
apparently) Anybody use these switches before, and am I just going to be
replacing the 'new' one in short order again? The dealer wanted almost
$40.00 for the switch, so I thought I was making out well at a quarter of
the stealer list price. I guess time will tell.
Anybody return any parts to P.A.P.? Wondering if pursuing the matter is
worth the effort?
Well thanks to all that offered up their advice!
Best regards,
Ted

The black wire gets power in both acc/run and start positions. It powers
the
fuel injection, ignition, and anything else needed to power the car.

Thanks Tony,
Would a failing crank position sensor show similar symptoms? Should the
black wire have juice when the switch is turned to the accessory position?
If so what will it be powering? Is it hot all the time?
Thanks for your suggestions.

"Here's the scenario: put the key in the ignition, and turn to the
accessory position, all the accessories work, but the dash warning lights
to don't come on, nor do any of the guages register (normally the fuel
guage rises; temp guage comes up; etc). Turn the key to start position and
the starter cranks the engine over just fine, it just doesn't start (and
still no guages or warning lights) Strangely, the fuel pump doesn't prime
the system either, when the key is put in the accessory position. I am
really starting to suspect the ignition switch, but I am having a hard time
with that because it is brand new.
Things I have tried: checked all the fuses; tried a different load
reduction rely; tried an another fuel pump relay; I haven't tried changing
the ignition switch, but I can try that after work. Any other suggestions
would be appreciated."
I'd get a meter in there and check the voltages off the ign switch in the
on
and cranking position. It sounds like terminal 15 (should be a black wire
off the switch) isn't getting power somehow, and your problem might be
elsewhere. The other accessories run off another terminal, as they don't
get
power while cranking.
