Questions about A/C vacuuming

Hi all, 
I am in the process of retrofitting my 89 90q with r134a and I have a
question regarding putting the system under vacuum.  The question is how
long do I need to keep the vacuum on and once it is at 30 inches can I
close it up and turn the compressor off or do I have to keep the
compressor pulling the whole time?

For informaiton purposes I have replaced the receiver/dryer and replaced
the orafice valve with a SmartVOV variable orafice valve.  Oh and
another thing, I purchased a venturi-type vacuum pump from Harbor
Freight and it comes with a 1/4" flare fitting that is intended for R-12
work.  I have had to buy a 1/4" flare to 1/2" ACME adapter fitting to
use it with my r134a manifold set.  Just in case anyone cares..
