clunk?

Mark,
My money's on the threaded collar that fastens the strut insert into the
strut housing being loose. After I R&R'ed the suspension on my car, it
was fine for about 5k miles, then I developed a nasty clunking just like
you. I finally tried reaching between the spring coils with a pipe
wrench and tightened the collar, problem solved. Somehow it can work
loose on the front struts if not tightened enough on assembly.
Best of luck,
Jon
Folks,
I tried to post to the list from a new account and got bounced..
The gist of the question is: after redoing the suspension w/ Bilsteins
and
H&R springs, as well as new tie rod ends, strut bearings, etc., I put
20k
miles on it with no issues (once I had the H&R coil "sleeves"
installed"). A
total dream machine.
I have recently developed a clunking noise when going over bumps, but
the
front end seems tight at all of the suspension mounting points. (As
verified
by myself, and yesterdays PA State Safety inspection. The inspector also
heard the noise, and was 'eager' ($$) to find a reason to fail the car,
but
could find nothing.)
It kinda sounds like a tube type shock with the rubber bushing gone.
Could this be consistant with subframe mounts begging to be replaced?
Any
BTDTs would be appreciated, as well as info on the R & R.
I don't have time for any diagnostics today, as I have to jump in and
drive
it 7 hours up to Boston.
Best regards,
Mark Woodland
