fuel tank coating color

I just replaced the leaking tank in my '91 200q20v, Nick, and I always
thought there was no lining in the tank, based on looking into what
appeared to be a pristine metal surface when I replaced the fuel pump a
year or so ago. My tank rusted from the outside in. Anyway, the old tank
still looks like shiny new metal inside, but there was a small accumulation
of red-brown stringy crud in the basket for the fuel pump. I'm surmising
this is a combination of rust and fuel that somehow formed together after
the rust perforated the tank, but I have no scientific support for that
thought.
