93' 90Q Manual Trans Gear Oil

The usual caveats are to make sure you can find and remove the filler plug first, but I realize we're beyond that point. ;-)

I'm not familiar with the '93 90q, but as Tony said the filler plug is usually on the same side as the drain, just up a bit higher on the unit. On any other quattro I've worked on, the same wrench is used for both drain and fill plugs, so if you have the drain plug out, you most likely already have the right wrench.

On the earlier cars, the recommended fluid is GL4 only. Typically what you'll find in the common auto parts store is GL5 which is _not_ recommended for the quattro transaxle. I'd advise double-checking the manual and be sure about what you're buying. If the manual calls for GL4, don't substitute GL5. If GL5 is mentioned at all on the bottle you pick up in the store, don't use it. The supposed "backwards compatibility" does not apply to the quattro transaxle. It's fine for the rear diff though.

Its on one side of the trans., behind the differential. About half way up
from top to bottom. You fill it till fluid runs out that hole. I would
strongly recommend new fluid, and possibly even synthetic. It is about $6 a
quart at Autozone, and your car shouldn't take more than four or five. I
believe the drain uses a 17mm socket. It is reversed, however, in that a nut
is what is needed and not a typical socket (I think it's the same as the
drain).

I'm wondering how to go about putting the gear oil back into the trans axle.
I have the old fluid out, I just don't know how to locate the filler hole
and once I find that how hard is it going to be to get to? Any help would be
great. Thanks.
        Cheers,
