I agree that being on good terms with a machine shop is always a good idea,
but it is easy to change the wheel bearing without even removing the strut
from the car.  I used some "scrap" metal and borrowed some time on a lathe
to make a tool so I can change the wheel bearing on the car.

I leave the car parts on the car. Well, except the bearing, which has to
come off the car so I can install the new one.
So far this inexpensive tool has changed 7 bearings successfully.
