exhaust manifold gaskets - Which way???

This may not apply to the turbo, but I was recently rebuilding the head on a 5-cyl Eurovan
and faced
the same issue. My mechanic friend told me that the gaskets should be installed metal
side to the head
so that if there is a leak, the exhaust gases would not lift the edge of metal foil. In
practice, I found
that because of the engine's design, 3 of the gaskets could be put metal side to the head,
the remaining
2 the other way around. If you are concerned about leaks (e.g., if the manifold contact
surface is
rusted, pitted, etc.), you can put a thin layer of Permatex Gold high-temp sealant on the
gasket. HTH.

motor? I was thinking maybe the metal side should go to the manifold and the paper to the
head. Is that right? TIA.
