Hi,
Late type 44 with a/c. Air will only come out the top and bottom vents,
nothing on the front of the dash. Is this the infamous flap? Is it fixable?
Tom,
First ...
- Assuming this car has the automatic climate control system?
- Also assuming the center vents are open ... there's a dial/wheel to open
close them.
Second ... I think what you describe may be normal under certain operating
conditions.
No, the flap/spring would not cause this problem.
One of the more common failures for the automatic climate control system is
in the A/C Programmer Temperature Control: Servo Motor and/or vacuum
solenoids.
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/AC.html#servo
Solenoid failure is usually the result of oil in the vacuum lines ... it is
recommended to install a filter in-line to trap any oil that may be present.
When this unit fails I think the default mode is to blow air >only< from
the upper vents at the windshield. If you are also getting air at the
bottom vents this would imply your A/C Programmer is OK.
