I guess apparently Audi engineers consider that the timing belt to be a
service item and breakage shouldn't be a "problem" if it's replaced
within its designed service life. AOA probably stretched that a bit
far with their maintenance intervals (to save cost). I wouldn't be
surprised if the Audi engine designers had shorter belt replacement
intervals in mind.
At any rate, I think it's probably safe to assume that timing chains
will make its way into future Audi engine designs.
