Timing Chain (Was Re: Between a Rock and a Rock: Repair or
Replace Engine?)

Mohammed,
Maybe because, if it breaks, they'll be removing the engine anyways (to bin
it). ;-) The "failure bell curve" is shifted way far into the future
compared to the belts. Those chains are pretty substantial - not like your
ol' bike chain. I remember how suprised I was when, while looking at a
Honka CRV for my wife, the salesman told me how it has a chain and not a
belt. It seems like the rubber/steel timing belt has become like the
pressure accumulator (aka "bomb") system - it just took longer to realize
that it's not a good idea to be so close to catastrophic failure.
I agree with Scott - using a chain means that Audi doesn't have to own up to
Owner's Manual misprints and angry customers - not that they don't have to
lean on the plunger as hard as they used to to get the engine in. 2" is
nothing in the age of land yachts.
Cheers!

1987 Audi 5kTQ - with a high tech pressure accumulator...what?
1980 Audi 5k - with a high tech 5 cylin...aw, c'mon
1962 and '64 Auto Union DKW Junior deLuxes - don't get me started.

front of the engine. Why the back where, if it breaks, and I believe they
do, it would mean removing the engine to replace.
