K&N filters bad?

Ok, on another similar note, I am converting to megasquirt shortly, and as
such was going to use a cone filter, does anyone have any recommendations?
There are $20 specials on ebay, but I don't think they'll do much
filtering!!!
Considerations are obviously : cost, filtration and performance (not that
there is much to gain but I don't want to lose power!!!) also I love the
5cyl noise, so I don't mind the volume created.

This is interesting stuff. I know from personal experience that I won't
use a K&N simply because of the negative impact to gas mileage. I
installed one in my old '95 Jetta which consistently turned in 30 mpg
around town. As soon as I installed the K&N, mileage dropped 10% - i.e., I
was only getting 27 mpg around town. "Maybe" the engine revved better; I
tend to think it was the power of suggestion on my part.
