audi 4k engine cooling / interior heating issues

Kevin,
I "think" what you are talking about is changing settings on the fuel
distributor. I have never had to play with setting the CO on any of my CIS
Audis. CIS cars that are vacuum tight do not need to have this adjusted.
Usually when a setting is changed at the fuel distributor it is because
there is a vacuum leak and the mechanic has "tuned" the car to run with the
vacuum leak. CIS cars use vacuum to control idle, there is no "proper" way
to adjust idle, AFAIK. (I'm sure if I am wrong on any of the above one of
our friendly listers will correct me ;-)

As for tuning our cars for more performance, you can increase timing
advance, tho (in my humble opinion) all that really does is change where the
power band is. Some people on the list have said that they notice an
increase of power at higher RPM's by advancing timing up to 15 degrees.
Running performance or high octane gas is not necessary, as our cars have a
8.5:1 compression ratio, and dont really take advantage of high octane gas.

I have read of people putting the cam from a turbo motor ( ie: a MC1 cam)
into their normally aspirated cars, I haven't tried it so I cant say whether
it makes a difference or not. There are also aftermarket cams available, but
changing the cam by itself is not going to give you (what I consider to be)
a significant power increase.

One of the best performance mod's (considering price) for the 4kq is to
transplant a MC1 turbo motor in from a 1984-85 Audi 5000, or to turbo the
existing motor. Quite a few people have done tranplants, but it is not a
straight swap and is fairly costly in time and money by the time all is said
and done. But once you have a turbo motor in there, you can get pretty much
what you want for power, as long as you want to pay for it ;-) Here is one
of the websites I have found covering this swap.

As for putting a turbo on the existing motor, Mike Gough ( I think) has
turboed his quantum synchro wagon (same motor we have in our 4kq's) and
has posted some pretty impressive performance from his car, if I recall
correctly 13.+ quarter mile times at ~ 90 MPH.

Hope this helps a bit,
Tom
