I can't speak on Audi or VW, but I did visit the Mercedes Museum in
2000. I was in the Stuttgart area on buiness and had time for one
Museum. My preference had been Porsche. All the locals independantly
recommended the Mercedes Museum. Mercedes have never really interested
me like Audi, but I think the Mueseum was excellent.
First you have to pick up a bus. The bus takes you into the
"compound". Amazingly I did see a BMW inside the gates. They have the
recorded self guided tours that seem to be popular over there in
whatever language you choose. Then you start your tour in chronological
order. Every car has technical information as well as some background
on its development. I don't know how many cars there were, but it
seemed like 50 to 80 including lots of old race cars. It was very neat
to go from a wooden frame motorized carriage at the begining to an F1
car at the end. Of course they also have a show room with all the
latest cars they would love you to take home. On top of all that it is
free.
I asked google for more details. Here is the site:

Whatever you decide enjoy your visit!
