Why wheels stickum?

I'll have to try this next time I change my wheels. I bought my first
Audi last August and decided to put snows on it for winter. When I went
to remove the wheels, I ended up *WAILING* on it with 5# hammer for
about 10 minutes per corner to get them loose (with a 1.5cm thick parts
catalog as padding to prevent damage to the rims). I was really worried
that I was doing something horribly wrong, as this was my first Audi
experience. Suffice to say that the catalog was toast after this
exercise... Here's to hoping that my snows come off without all the
banging.
