Parking Brake Cable removal - 87 5KTQW

I am trying to remove/replace the parking brake cables on this avant,
and am stuck trying to get the front most cable free. This is where the
cable body fits into a sheet metal bracket welded to the frame. There
are two holes thru which the cables go. Somehow they are fastened to
that bracket, and I have not seen how to release them so that I can
replace them.

It appears to me (even after washing off much mud/dirt) that the sheet
metal backet just forms around a groove in the metal end of the cable.
Is that right, do I just bend back the sheet metal to free this end of
the cable? Or is there a clip of some sort that keeps the cable from
pulling out of this bracket?

Thanks. (any other tips for replacing these cables appreciated too)

Steve
