I've got a friend that has an '04 VW Passat 1.8T with 4-Motion. I spent a
fair amount of time behind the wheel both in town and on the road in
northers WI. Not too bad of a car, but I don't really feel the lineage, if
that makes any sense. It seems like all the life has been taken out of that
car. Not too much character inside or out, and really low on power in my
opinion. Maybe a manual transmission would help, but I don't think that is
available. It is nice and quiet on the road at speed, and seems pretty
tight though. He had to take it in to the dealer for a check engine light
and a couple of broken knobs (within the first week!) and he got an '04
Jetta 1.8T with the sport package as a loaner- that car was a different
story. What a ball to drive! It was even an automatic fwd too. 6-speed
and 4-motion, that would be a hard package to beat! Then there's the
R32...finally a decent variant of the GTI to come along in a long time!

I'm seriously considering a 1.8T Passat now that they are offering AWD
in it.
