It's a marketing decision. Audi is selling cars for today,
not for someone to buy 8 years from now to modify.
For example, a customer walks into an Audi dealership and sees
an A6 - nice styling, nice interior, tiptronic, and a, a...
what? 5-cylinder? Mmm, that's interesting. The BMW 5 series
he just looked at has a 6. Heck, he can get a 6 in a Honda or
a Mazda or a Nissan. "Thank you for stopping by."
Econo cars have 4 cylinders. Big cars have 6s and 8s. (At least,
that's the case in the US). The 5s are oddball, which is OK if
you're selling to a niche market. It's not so good if you want
to move 200,000 units.
