David admitted ....
"- New spark plugs (like an idiot I changed them *after* the test...
(Bosch Platinum's... they seem to work great.. the old ones were white
powderish)
- 92 Octane
- K&N Air Filter just shook the dust out of it recently..."
It's too rich by a smidgen, and what fuel's going in there isn't burning
completely. Ditch the K&N, VERY carefully (and thoroughly!) clean the MAF
(nasty from the K&N oil), ditch the plats (they just flat don't get it in a
20v), and run lower octane fuel. Any smog guy with an ounce of practical
experience will tell you that lower octane fuel burns cleaner because of
it's lower volatility. That should get you there, especially if you sit and
run it at 4K RPM for about 5 minutes immediately before the test. I
squeaked by my smog check Monday last. My shop is next door to a smog
station, and I deal with this stuff daily, BTW. Good luck! HTH, John
