Here in Detroit, they pick up rust really well too. Friend of mine has an
'85 or so Corolla where you can peel what's left of the front fenders away
with one finger. The skin for the hood literally rolled back off its
supporting beams one day on the freeway (it's secured with bungee cords
now.)
Though Subarus would be superior cars here with our climate, there are
hardly any older ones about. They were all sacrificed to the salt god
long ago. Late 80's ones are typically in the condition of my friend's
Corolla.. My 5K has limited rust by comparison, probably because of the
galvanized body, but we'll see what next winter does to it.
Granted if you're the sort interested in a new car every three or four
years, the thin-gauge bodywork may not be of concern to you (at least, not
so long as your insurance covers the beauty mark some jackass in an
Excursion will inevitably leave in a supermarket parking lot.)
