If you are just trying to find TDC on the cam, the easiest way is to look at
the cam lobes on #1. They should be at about 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. They
should be facing upwards as much as possible, opposite each other from the
12 o'clock centerline of the lobes. Your pulley may be backwards, check and
make sure if there is a way.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Type 44 Cylinder Head Question
Hi All,
I'm replacing the cylinder head gasket on my '89 100. Here is my problem.
I have a small round mark on the 'OUTSIDE' of the camshaft pulley. I have
not been able to see any marks on the inside of the pulley to line up with
the top of the cylinder head. The mark on the outside, does not sync with
the mark on the flywheel for TDC. The car was running when I parked it
(mild overheating problem because of hose that wife didn't catch in time.)
At any rate, I don't think the timing belt jumped simply because it was
running so well. I don't know where to go from here. I'm thinking about a
thin rod dropped into cylinder 1 to see if TDC syncs with the mark at the
bellhousing. Maybe someone has been down this road in the past on this car
and the camshaft pulley was removed and reinstalled incorrectly? Any
thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks,
Eric Wulf
