My 85 4k had a similar problem with the engine dying while driving.
It happened a number of times. I would pull off the road, wait a few
minutes, it would start up.

The problem turned out to be the electrical connector at the pump. The
connectors  were the "push-on" type . . . kind of like spark plug wires. No
nuts to keep the connector securely attached.
I added a washer and nut . . .problem solved.

Apparently, the connectors would overheat, expand, lose contact . . .pump
stops running . .engine stalls.
I thought it was a nutty way to attach electrical connections. Especially in
that area under the car, which is subject to water spray, dirt, salt, etc
etc.
