Definitely start at the lean end of the adjustment and work your way to
the rich side. I inherited a job on a 89 5ktq that had an engine swap
done by some monkey lads and then somehow ended up at a Ford dealership
in non running condition were it was acquired for handsome sum of $800.
The mixture adjustment had been turned every which way so I decided to
try setting it at the baseline measurement per Bently. Wrong tactic.
Either I measured wrong or I was using the wrong page in the book but
when I fired up the car it didn't run. When I pulled a plug I could see
a puddle of fuel sitting on the piston. Yikes! Apparently I has it
adjusted to the point that fuel was being injected even with the
airflow plate in the rest position. I could very easily have
hydrolocked the motor with fuel and messed it up. After turning it in
the lean direction something like four complete turns I started to get
to the proper range. The good news is that the car has been running
strong for about six months now.
