Definitely start at the lean end of the adjustment and work your way to 
the rich side. I inherited a job on a 89 5ktq that had an engine swap 
done by some monkey lads and then somehow ended up at a Ford dealership 
in non running condition were it was acquired for handsome sum of $800. 
The mixture adjustment had been turned every which way so I decided to 
try setting it at the baseline measurement per Bently. Wrong tactic. 
Either I measured wrong or I was using the wrong page in the book but 
when I fired up the car it didn't run. When I pulled a plug I could see 
a puddle of fuel sitting on the piston. Yikes! Apparently I has it 
adjusted to the point that fuel was being injected even with the 
airflow plate in the rest position. I could very easily have 
hydrolocked the motor with fuel and messed it up. After turning it in 
the lean direction something like four complete turns I started to get 
to the proper range. The good news is that the car has been running 
strong for about six months now.
