My 1996 A4 is going strong at 123k miles. Valve cover gasket replaced..no
leaks. April 1996 build and has been very good. Audi replaced the control
arms with the updated ones, so no groans.
Before you write off whole model years, write off cars that are modified and
unknown quantities first.
Like Ti said, chipping the 1.8t means that little turbo is even more
stressed. You can't get hp gains out of the V6 as cheaply/easily as the
1.8t. V6 cars (12 and 30 valve) have nicer trim/features compared to the
1.8t (in general).
Oh, my car is for sale too... Need a trailer for my UrQ. :-)
