This was a great car for me. I greatly enjoyed driving it and spent a lot of time and sweat to maintain it. One day in the summer 2001 the clutch refused to pop up because of the problem with hydraulics. I replaced a clutch Master Cylinder but it didn't help. I bought a slave cylinder but didn't have time to install it.
I had another car (still have it, my good ol' trustin' Golf) and things got busy with work and life. So I kept starting the Audi from time to time to keep it alive. One spring day in 2002 it didn't start. I never got to look at what caused the starting problem as things got even more busy with other stuff. Probably it was electrical contact in the starter. I can't tell now.
Things changed and I moved out from that area. The car was sitting at my friend's place and I was hoping that I will find time to put it back on the road. I now realize that I should have given it to a pair of good hands earlier but I really liked that car and that made me convince myself to keep it and to hope that I will fix it.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I do realize now that I will never get to working on it. My heart breaks when I think about giving her to a junk-yard where she will rust with cars stacked on it. I know that most people think that this is where this car belongs but this does not make me change my mind. So, I would like to give it free of charge to someone who wants to fix it a put it back on the road.
The trick is of course to get it from where it is now. It needs a tow on a flat bad. The car now sits in Centereach, NY (that is on Long Island). If anyone is interested or knows someone in the area who might be interested, please respond to me by email. Below is some more detailed information on the car.
It is an '84 Audi 4000S Quattro. 150,000 miles. I bought the car from a second owner who lived and used it on Long Island. The first owner was from Vermont (judging from repair bills I saw). I bought it for my girlfriend in 1997 with about 100K miles. I have a complete history of parts I bought and installed for this car with dates and receipts. This list includes a master cylinder, front brake caliper, brake pads and disks (front and rare), fuel pump and a radiator. I also replaced some vacuum and water hoses and all brake hoses. I might have forgotten something here but it is all in the folder I could give you.
Also, I have both Bentley and Haynes manuals for this model, if you want them. I have no use for them and I can give them too.
The car has alloyed wheels with almost new tires. Tires did not loose pressure from sitting in the driveway for three years.
I changed the oil, and all filters regularly, although an air filter change is a real pain in this car.
As for clutch hydraulics, I put in a new clutch Master Cylinder and pressure bled the clutch system but it didn't help. I bought a clutch slave
cylinder but I did not install it.
One of the rear door handles is broken and I have a brand new handle but also yet not installed.
Recently I put its 90 Amp alternator into my Golf, but I am now rebuilding my original Golf alternator and will put the replacement
back into the Audi once I am done.
Besides the slave cylinder and a door handle , I have other brand new parts for this car not installed. I buy parts mostly by mailorder from places like www.importpartsspec.com, www.forparts.com and vwparts.com
Here is the list of parts (all brand new)
the ATE slave cylinder (VAG p/n 443 721 261) with a bleeder valve;
LUCAS brake booster (VAG p/n 443 612 107 F);
Raybestos brake pads (I bought them in Pep Boys);
Lower rear ball-joint 857 505 365;
Front Right tie rod end (female thread) VAG 811419812a = Beck/Arnley p/n 101-3740;
timing belt Beck/Arnley 026-0158 = VAG p/n 035 109 119;
Water pump gasket Beck/Arnley p/n 039-4021;
Brand new Bosch ignition wiring set (5 cylinder car!);
Brand New Air Filter either by MANN or by BOSCH.
A Bosch Distributor Cap;
Rare right-hand side door handle.
I would very much like to give this car to good hands where it will be fixed and put back on the road. As for the parts, I would like to get some money from what I paid for them. I could try selling them on ebay, but if you want them I would give them to you for one half of what I paid. The last condition is fully negotiable. What is really important is that car needs to be taken without delay. My friend, who rented a house were the Audi is located just moved out and the landlord demands the car to be removed, which is of course a fair demand.
If anyone is interested or knows someone interested on or close to Long Island, please let me know.
Regards to all,
Andrew T.
