On our '88 80q we just removed the amps from the speakers when we replaced
the stock stereo.  We soldered connectors to the wire leads to the speaker
coils and then ran some heavier gauge wire from the stereo.  Sounds great
and the speakers themselves seem to be able to handle the 50w output from
the stereo fine.
