Search the archives, this was discussed at length here about, oh, a year 
ago or so.

PSI = pounds per square inch.  (GVW)/(all four patches...)

and every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction.

If you add weight, the patch size increases.  the weight borne by each 
unit area is still the same as the pressure inside the tire.

The reverse holds, as well.  Altering the pressure while keeping weight 
constant also changes the patch area.

caveat:  as long as the rim is supported by the tire, and the sidewalls 
are not doing any "supporting" either.  IE, under any normal conditions.
