Yep, the starter can be pretty difficult to get out. Are the bolts the trouble now, or are the bolts already out? The top bolt is really the difficult one. You need a regular 19mm wrench. The car has to be lifted to get to it, and I think it was easiest when I stuck the wrench in through the tie-rod opening above the sub-frame. Getting the bolt out even after it was loosened was a little tricky.
Once you get the bolts out, I would replae that stupid t-bolt thing with a regular bolt (M12x90 or something). Don't forget the nuts and washers. The starter was real easy to to put in and take out with the new hardware (I had to pull it out b/c I thought the starter was bad; turned out I connected the solenoid wire to the wrong terminal). Be careful when putting the bolt back not to drop the nut or washers into the opening in the transaxle case. I did this, but luckily I was able to get to it through the lower opening in the case. But there's no guarantee that the washer or nut will end up close enough to that lower opening, so be careful. good luck.

Hi, We got a starter for my 89 Audi 200 Turbo Auto Non-Q and when my hubby went to put it in he finds he cannot get the old one out . . . . is there a trick to this or does he need a special tool? If so, where would be a good place to get one. We are in Flagstaff, AZ, now :-) Cheers, Fay and Jim
