Agreed that you could make this car for the same (or maybe a little more)
than the reserve price. However this car--as an alleged AOA/VAG-commisioned
one-off, has provenance that you can't put price on. I think it depends on
what you're after--if its a drop top Coupe, then get one sliced and diced,
but if it's a garage queen/show car/object of pure affection, I think the
real deal is the way to go.
I've been in and around ultra-rare cars my whole life (1 of 1 built, 1 of 7
built, 1/119, 1/149, 1/650, 1/1600...). With the very rare, it's easier to
estimate a value, since you can look at comparative historical selling
prices (however few) and what the market will bear. It can still be hard
because they tend to be at the high--and usually the volatile--end of the
market. One year a '32 Duesenberg SJ can fetch over a half million, and a
couple years later it might have a hard time breaking $300k. Maybe because
of 'what's hot,' the economy, a recent liquidation of a collection, etc.
But with one-offs, it always boils down to one thing and one thing only:
what one person (and I do mean one) will pay for it. There is a one-off in
the collection of a family friend that was Chrysler president K.T. Keller's
personal car, custom made for him and is almost impossible to value. Some
have placed the value at over $1M, others say its far less, but the only way
to know is on the day it sells.
Dave, you and a small handful of others *are* the market for the American
Sunroof Coupe. I am eager to see what happens.
Again, best of luck...I'd like to see you own this car.
