Close, it was the axle nut. I did check the lug nuts. One of the horror
stories I heard as a newbi driver was when a fellow high school student
didn't tighten up enough after changing a flat and lost the wheel while
traveling down a highway. They lucked out that time, but no word on if they
managed to survive the 20 years since graduation, though. ;-)

But I'll be keeping a close eye on that axle. Neither I nor anyone else had
touched that part since I bought the car (2yrs ago), and I'm not sure why it
would have loosened up. And I don't think that normally problems with this
are an issue with these cars, since I've never seen anything posted on the
list.
