This afternoon I took the spider and side gears out of the bad
transmission's ring gear carrier. They came out without removing the ring
gear from the carrier. There is only a plastic thrust washer in there
other than the gears, so as long as I keep the four gears (2 side and 2
spider inside the ring gear carrier) together as a set everything should be
ok. I was able to put the old transmission together easily, which leads me
to believe I will be able to accomplish this swap effectively.
