B5 S4 HID Ballast Replacement?

As the result of water damage from driving thru
Hurricane Jeanne, one of my ballast units is
intermittent and/or now completely dead.  Is there a
way to replace an OEM ballast ($300+) with a generic
Hella or Phillips one (~$100)?  I can use the bottom
plate of the OEM one to seal the headlite unit. 
Assuming I get a ballast that matches the output of
the OEM one, the only other issue I can see would be
the OEM plug (6-pin) versus the plug receptacle on the
non-OEM ballast.  Anyone done this?
