The actuating rod is attached to the vacuum actuator via the plastic
"joiner" piece. I have had good luck sticking a small common screwdriver
in between the prongs of the joiner to pop the rod out of the prongs.
Then the rod just pulls out of the joiner. The end of the actuator rod
turns 90 degrees towards the transmission, but does not have any other
lips or catches to it. Once freed of the joiner, it comes out easily. I
have had some that were a bit tricky to free from the joiner, and I
unfastened the actuator from the transmission to help manipulate the
rod/joiner piece. Also, you want ot be careful about the plastic joiner
piece. I don't recall if you get a new one with the new actuator, but I
seem to recall taking the old one from the old actuator to install on the
new one, so you probably don't want to break the joiner.

HTH!
