Several years ago I had some 8-year-old tires on a car--I hadn't driven
many miles per year since getting the tires. They looked OK, but 2
tires failed within a week of each other. One (rear) tire blew out on
the freeway. Fortunately, the car (Peugeot 504) kept its composure very
nicely as I pulled onto the shoulder. If it were my Taurus, I'd replace
the tires.
