As far simple stopping distance, I think the tires are the limitation on 
  the cars in question.

The other issue, repeated brake performance, is probably improved with 
the rear discs, not because of area (I don't think it is really larger - 
friction material area certainly isn't) but because of the ability to 
dissipate heat better.
