The Callaway turbo conversion for the type 85 used an IHI turbo with
integral wastegate. An intercooler is mounted horizontally under the
car with an airscoop, and an oil cooler is added behind the grill. The
stock fuel injection and ignition is used without modification, but is
augmented by a Callaway "Microfueler" electronic module that enriches
the mixture under boost. The A/C compressor has to be changed to a
Sanden and relocated to clear the custom exhaust manifold and turbo.
The oil filter is also relocated. The Callaway kit included all the
plumbing and hardware needed, as well as a very good installation
manual with illustrations, but installation was not a trivial matter,
requiring an experienced shop. Trimming of sheet metal was required
in some places.

The max boost is 10 psi. The rated horsepower is 170 @ 5500 rpm and
torque is 175 lb-ft.

VW & Porsche magazine (the previous incarnation of European Car) published
a series of articles "Project Audi Coupe GT" in 1986. They fitted the
Callaway turbo kit, upgraded the suspension and wheels/tires, did a
leather interior makeover, and added a bunch of audio and electronics
enhancements.

The 0-60 mph acceleration, published by VW&P was 7.2 secs, compared
to 9.3 stock.
